SN Subrahmanyan is all set to take over the reins from the current chief executive AM Naik who has been heading L&T for the past 18 years. He is expected to take charge on July 1st, 2017 and will be the non-executive chairman of the company from 1st October 2017.
Subrahmanyan who is 56 currently, is a civil engineer and has a post graduation degree in Business Management.
He has been an integral part in the rise of the company and his own rise. From being a project planning engineer in 1984 when he first joined L&T to now being its top Boss has been nothing short of sheer hard work and endless dedication. He owes his rise to Naik, who had spotted him over a decade ago when he was the General Manager in the company’s construction unit. Since then he has never looked back and has been instrumental in many of the company’s large projects such as the construction of airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru; Metro systems in Qatar and Saudi Arabi: the Hitec City and Hitex Exhibition Centre in Hyderabad.
According to Naik, the complexity of L&T with its multiple lines of businesses, an executive hired from outside might not be able to steer the company, so that’s why Subrahmanyan was trusted upon to lead the company.
The succession has been in the news for some time now, and Subrahmanyan has been groomed accordingly for his future challenges by his mentors. L&T has interests in technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services, and has revenue of over $16 billion.The challenges for Subrahmanyan in the near future is to consolidate on what is available for the company and be competitive and smarter in what they do.
Subrahmanyan said that the company would prioritize defense, water treatment, and distribution, lift irrigation schemes, smart cities, and digital businesses.
At the same time, it would continue to focus on the infrastructure and realty businesses as they have been growth drivers for the last few years.
Above all this one huge task that lies ahead of Subrahmanyan is to win the trust of all the stakeholders and make them believe in him the same way as they believed in his predecessors.
