Chandra Babu Naidu to setup innovation centers

Andhra Pradesh CM, N Chandra Babu Naidu, has collaborated with foreign universities to setup Startup and innovation centers in universities across Andhra Pradesh. He also advised that this should become a national phenomenon. Inaugurating the three-day 12th FICCI Higher Education Summit–2016, ‘Learn in India–Learn for the World’ here on Friday, Chandra Babu Naidu claimed that his was the ‘only state in India with an innovation and start-up policy’. European Union Director-General, Martine Reicherts was among others who addressed the summit. Education Ministers from Botswana, Kyrgyzstan and Taiwan and delegations representing more than 55 countries including BRICS, Africa, West Asia, SAARC, CIS, Canada and the U.S. attended the event. More than one thousand national and international delegates including Indian and foreign university Presidents, Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors and Deans attended the event.

During his speech at the summit, Chandra Babu Naidu talked about ‘the need for certain reforms in the education sector, both in terms of spirit and practicality of the knowledge imparted’. Chandra Babu Naidu said that his government would establish ‘Startup and Innovation societies’ in each university and college with incubation centers. He further added that his government had facilitated collaboration between Andhra University and the University of California in Berkeley, to set up a center for open innovation at Andhra University as well as other universities in the state. Chandra Babu Naidu said that all the universities in his state had smart campuses and five institutes of national importance namely: IIM (Visakhapatnam), IIT (Tirupati), IIIT Kurnool, NIT (Tadepalligudem, West Godavari) and IISER (Tirupati) had been established since the birth of the state in June 2014. Chandra Babu Naidu said twelve additional national institutes were in the process of being set up including the AIIMS (Mangalagiri), the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and Petroleum (IIFTP) and Energy Universities in Visakhapatnam. He said his government had setup a 25-member State Knowledge Advisory Board with eminent educators, industrialists and academicians from across the globe to help formulate and implement a roadmap for higher education. He expressed happiness at the FICCI’s decision to enter into two MoUs for the establishment of FICCI Centre for Excellence for Grassoot Initiatives and Development in Amaravati and National Knowledge Functional Hub at Sri Venkateswara University for sustained industry-academia engagement resulting in enhanced employability of engineering students in his state.

Research, innovation and incubation for startups are the need of the hour as far as India is concerned. Today’s research is tomorrow’s solution. Only by investing in research and innovation can a country progress. India has a vast youth and talent pool. There is plenty of talent in India as far as engineering and software are concerned. India has the potential to launch many more new and innovative startups and develop existing ones. All these startups need are more funding, incubation and exchange of technical know hows to grow which Chandra Babu Naidu has promised to provide in all the universities in his state. If the talents and startups of India are properly nurtured, they will grow to become global leaders and provide need of the hour solutions and products to not only India, but also to rest of the world. Education is the backbone of any country’s economy and all progress in the country begins with encouraging research and innovation at universities. Chandra Babu Naidu’s move to collaborate with the University of California to setup innovation and startup centers in Andhra University and other universities in Andhra is a truly commendable move.
